Angling Arts Classes
The Ernie Nester Chapter of Trout Unlimited (ENCTU) is excited to announce the schedule of our 2020 Angling Arts Classes for individuals wishing to learn and expand their knowledge of fly fishing.
The classes cover a broad range of topics for a variety of skill levels. There is a basic registration fee of $30.00 per person per course, and some classes have additional fees for materials. You do not have to be a Trout Unlimited member to enroll; the classes are open to anyone.
Children under the age of fourteen must be accompanied by an adult who will attend the class with them. Registration fees can be paid at the first meeting of the class.

Starting Thursday, January 30 - Elk Elementary Center
Beginning Rod Building - 6:00 - 9:00pm * 7 Weeks * $30 Registration * Max: 15 participants.
Experienced rod crafters help you build the rod of your choice. The first night, instructors cover the rod building basics & assist you in selecting the materials to build your one of a kind rod. You purchase all materials for this class. Cost varies upon what materials you select. At the conclusion of the first class if you decide not to continue, your registration will be refunded that night.
Beginning Fly Tying 6:30 - 8:30pm * 6 Weeks * Registration $30 * Materials Fee: $10 * Max 12
Learn the basic principles of fly tying. Equipment & materials are provided for the class.
Intermediate Fly Fishing - 6:00- 9:00pm * 4 Weeks * Registration $30 * Max: 15 participants
Enhance your fly fishing skills & techniques through lectures, demonstrations and videos from an experienced fly angler. One night we video you casting, and an experienced caster reviews it with you offering suggestions for improving your techniques. Fly fishing experience required.
Stream Hydrology, Entomology & Ecology - 6:00- 9:00pm * 4 Weeks * Registration $30
We are pleased to offer this new module taught by Doug Chambers. In general it is an introduction to some of the science behind trout fishing. It includes studying steam flow & type and how they influence trout habitat and feeding when coupled other factors as geology and topography. There even is a bit of chemistry thrown in the mix. He covers the basics of trout biology and ecology as well as the other fish found in a trout stream and their relation to trout. No participant limit.
Starting Thursday, April 2 - Elk Elementary Center
Ed Hayne’s Speciality Class - 6:00 - 9:00pm * 4 Weeks * Registration $30
Ed investigates the techniques and skills to find West Virginia brooke trout streams and the most effective techniques and flies for fishing those steams. No participation limit.
Advanced Rod Building - 6:00 - 9:00pm * 5 Weeks * Registration $30 * $15 Materials Fee
Participants in this class do not build a rod, but learn a variety of advanced techniques and theory through lectures, demonstrations, videos and hands-on practice. All materials are provided. Persons must have built at least one rod before taking this class. Maximum: 15 participants.
Beginning Fly Fishing - Monday & Thursday 6:00 - 9:00pm * April 6, 9, 13, 17 * Registration $30
Everything you need to know to start fly fishing. This four night 3-hour class presents fly fishing concepts, casting skills, entomology, fly selection & presentation, conservation, safety, knot tying & equipment and more through lectures, videos and hands-on practice. Fly rods and other materials are provided for each person to use. Maximum: 20 participants.
The Same Beginning Fly Fishing Class is Presented In Hurricane * April 20, 23, 27 & 30 *
Monday & Thursday 6:00 - 9:00pm * Registration $30 * Maximum: 20 participants.
You do not have to be a member of Trout Unlimited to take a class. Children under 14 years must be accompanied by an adult taking the same class. Registration & fees payable at the first class.
