Angling Arts Classes

The Ernie Nester Chapter of Trout Unlimited (ENCTU) is excited to announce the schedule of our 2019 Angling Arts Classes for individuals wishing to learn and expand their knowledge of fly fishing. 

 

The classes cover a broad range of topics for a variety of skill levels. There is a basic registration fee of $30.00 per person per course, and some classes have additional fees for materials. You do not have to be a Trout Unlimited member to enroll; the classes are open to anyone.

 

The first session of classes will begin on January 31, 2019, at the Elkview Elementary Center (Map) and additional classes during the second session, which begins on March 28, 2019, will be held in Hurricane, West Virginia.

 

Children under the age of fourteen must be accompanied by an adult who will attend the class with them. Registration fees can be paid at the first meeting of the class.

Beginning Fly Tying 

Begins on January 31, 2019, at 6:30 p.m.

Meets: January 31; February 7, 14, 21, 28; March 7

Elkview Elementary Center

A six-week class focused on learning the basics of fly tying. Participants will learn the principles of fly tying and tie a different fly each week. There is no fly tying or fly fishing experience necessary. The class size is limited to fourteen students and will fill up quickly. There is an additional materials fee of $10 for this class.

Beginning Rod Building 

Begins on January 31, 2019, at 6:00 p.m.

Meets: January 31; February 7, 14, 21, 28; March 7, 14

Elkview Elementary Center

A seven-week class covering the basics of rod building. Participants will build a fishing rod of their choice. In addition to the registration fee, participants pay for their rod building materials which vary depending upon the rod they decide to build. The first class meeting focuses on selecting the rod and ordering the materials. The class size is limited to fourteen participants with four instructors and is expected to fill up quickly.

Intermediate Fly Fishing 

Begins January 31, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. 

Meets: January 31; February 7, 14, 21, 28

Elkview Elementary Center

A five-week class focused on improving participants' fly fishing skills, techniques, and knowledge of fly fishing. Participants will receive a video analysis of their cast. They will also learn about casting from kayaks, boats, and other floating watercraft. Some experience with fly fishing is recommended. 

Advanced Fly Tying 

Begins March 28, 2019, at 6:00 p.m.

Meets: March 28; April 4, 11, 18

Elkview Elementary Center

A four-week class designed for experienced fly tiers seeking to learn more advanced techniques of fly tying. There is an additional $10 materials fee for this class. 

Advanced Rod Building 

Begins March 28, 2019, at 6:00 p.m.

Meets: March 28; April 4, 11, 18, 25

Elkview Elementary Center

A four-week class designed for rod builders seeking to elevate their rod building skills. A variety of rod building techniques will be presented by experienced rod builders, including butt wraps, making carbon fiber handles, putting designs on handles, applying applicades, and much more. Participants do not build a fishing rod in this class, they will be given a blank rod on which to practice the skills and techniques that are demonstrated. There is an additional $15 material's fee for this class.

Beginning Fly Fishing (Charleston Class)

Begins April 1, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.

Meets: April 1, 4, 8, 11

Elkview Elementary Center

A four-night class focused on the basics of fly fishing for those with little to no experience. Participants will gain an understanding of all aspects of fly fishing. All materials and fly rods are provided for use in the class. Participants may bring their own fly rod; if a person plans to purchase a fly rod, we suggest they wait until after this class so they have a full understanding of fly rod options.

Beginning Fly Fishing (Hurricane Class)

Begins April 15, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.

Meets: April 15, 18, 22, 25

First Baptist Church Education Building

A four-night class focused on the basics of fly fishing for those with little to no experience. Participants will gain an understanding of all aspects of fly fishing. All materials and fly rods are provided for use in the class. Participants may bring their own fly rod; if a person plans to purchase a fly rod, we suggest they wait until after this class so they have a full understanding of fly rod options.

Specialty Fly Fishing

Begins March 28, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. 

Meets: March 28, April 4, 11, 18

Elkview Elementary Center

Instructor Ed Haynes will host a class for experienced anglers. In the past his classes have focused on the exploration of new fly tying materials and techniques. This year's class topic will be announced very soon.
